Safety Training for Construction Workers

Construction consistently records more workplace fatalities than any other U.S. industry, and OSHA's response is a training-heavy rulebook: 29 CFR 1926 contains explicit training requirements in dozens of subparts. What safety training do construction workers need?

The Focus Four: construction's deadliest hazards

  • Falls — from roofs, ladders, scaffolds, and structural steel.
  • Struck-by — vehicles, falling loads, flying objects.
  • Caught-in/between — trench collapses, equipment rollovers, pinch points.
  • Electrocution — overhead lines, damaged cords, missing GFCIs.

OSHA requires training to be delivered in a manner workers understand — and inspectors do check. Is OSHA 10 required for construction workers?

Federally, no — but states including New York, Nevada, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia mandate it for some or all construction work, and most large GCs require it by contract regardless of state law.

How often does construction safety training need to be repeated?

Fall protection and most 1926 training must be repeated when deficiencies are observed, equipment or systems change, or workers demonstrate inadequate knowledge. Forklift operators need re-evaluation at least every three years.

Who counts as a "competent person"?

Someone able to identify existing and predictable hazards AND with employer authorization to correct them. Training alone doesn't create a competent person — the authority component matters, and several subparts (excavation, scaffolds, fall protection) require one on site.
